Hotel Description
Originally built in around 1870, the Steventon House Hotel still retains much of its country house charm and atmosphere; today it offers comfortable, well-appointed accommodation in a convenient location.
Located just off the A34, with easy access to the M4, the M40 and all of the region’s major roads, the hotel has a great location for those visiting the area on business and for tourists. Several of the region’s major business parks are close by and there are numerous visitor attractions within easy driving distance.
The main building was built in around 1870 and some of the fine trees in the hotel’s grounds were planted at the same time. The house was converted into a hotel in 1981 and today its mature grounds complement its attractive, peaceful setting. There are 23 en suite rooms, 2 lounges, a bar and a conservatory restaurant, which opens out onto the hotel’s beautiful lawns and gardens.
Despite its convenient location and good access to the area’s main roads, the hotel has a quiet, tranquil location that ensures a restful, relaxing, restorative stay. Its attractive surroundings and the beautiful grounds make it a beautiful setting for weddings and other functions, with the large conservatory-style dining room opening out onto the grounds.
As a part of the larger Milton Hill Estate, the house was once owned by the sewing machine magnate, Sir Mortimer Singer. It is rumoured that his mistress, Isadora Duncan, the famous dancer, lived here for a time.
From 1903 to 1912, the house was home to the Eyston family, of whom George, a racing driver, was the most famous. He broke more world records with different types of motor vehicle than any other man of his time. In 1938, he broke the world's land speed record for the third time, travelling at 357 mph (575 km/h) in his vehicle, Thunderbolt. A plaque to this effect can be found on the wall by the front door of the hotel.
