Area Information

The Spread Eagle Inn is situated in the heart of the village of Barton Bendish, a rural hamlet in beautiful west Norfolk. The inn is between the historic market towns of Swaffham, the location of Stephen Fry's hit TV series Kingdom, and Downham Market, with its famous ginger bread houses (so called as they are constructed of orange-coloured Norfolk carrstone).

The inn is just 30 to 40 minutes’ drive from the scenic north Norfolk and north-west Norfolk coast, making it a great base from which to explore both countryside and coast alike.

West Norfolk boasts some of the best footpaths and bridleways for walkers and cyclists, with the famous roman path of Peddars Way and the scenic Nar Valley Way only a short distance from Barton Bendish. West Norfolk and the fens also offer some of the best fishing and shooting in the country and these time-honoured sports are still available for your enjoyment.

If heritage is your passion, the area is also home to the National Trust's Oxborough Hall, home of the Bedingfeld family since the 1500s. The Royal Estate at Sandringham is also well worth a visit.

For the children, the rare-breed animal farm at Stow Bardolph offers both enjoyment and an educational experience. For the birdwatchers, why not visit The Wild Fowl Trust at Welney, only a short drive away. For wildlife enthusiasts, Thetford Forest offers all kinds of flora and fauna, including wild deer, nightjars and barn, tawny and little owls. The forest is also rich in interesting plant life, including fungi and woodland flowers.

West Norfolk really does have something for everyone, so whether you are after rest and relaxation, activity and adventure, or a little bit of both, the Spread Eagle is a great base.
