Loved the cottage style court yard area and that it was a peaceful place to stay. Mattress was extremely comfortable too - which is hard to come by in hotels!

Breakfast not included in the cost and quite expensive too.

"Internet connection didn't work in either a 'normal' or 'executive' room. The TV didn't work in the executive room. Despite these small but irritating faults the staff were helpful, attentive and did the best they could to resolve the problems. Overall, a pleasant hotel in which to stay - but please fix the little problems!" (97249571)

    Pleasant and helpful staff.

    Poor room equipment.

  • 6/10 Peter ( Mature couple)

from Middlewich , GB  on  March 22, 2008

"Although the quality of the food in the restaurant was good, the service was quite poor. We ordered red wine which arrived chilled! When we commented on this the waitress asked if we would like it warmed up!! It was only just getting to the right room temperature at the end of the meal. When we ordered our dessert we also asked for coffee to be brought and when I asked if the milk could be hot the waitress said she wasn't sure if the kitchen could cope with this request. However, it did. From finishing our dessert we waited for almost 40 minutes for our coffee to be brought to the table and this was only after I had flagged a waitress and told her we had been waiting for our coffee. She just said Sorry, the kitchen is very busy tonight. The restaurant was busy that night but that is the hotel's problem, not mine. More staff should be employed. I gather that both the manager and another member of the management team were both on holiday. There certainly seemed to be no direction in the restaurant. I also noticed another lady waiting for her coffee and in the end she got up and went to speak to a waitress who then brought it to her. Another lady at the table next to us was also getting very cross as she had been waiting for over half an hour for the bread to be brought to her table." (97477122)

The bathroom was very small - the loo right up against the handbaisin. Also, the room, particularly the bed, smelt of smoke. Surprisingly there was still a smoking sign on the door. I thought smoking had been banned??!!

  • 8/10 David ( Group of work colleagues)

The hotel looks great and the staff were all really friendly. The grounds and leisure facilities were awesome !!!

    The expensive cost of breakfast.

  • 9/10 Christine ( Solo business traveller)

from Cheshire , GB  on  November 14, 2007

The recent refurbishment has clearly been carefully thought out with aspects such as the all white bathrooms giving a modern, light and spacious perception.Mirrored door wardrobe, full size!!! always good for women.Usually you can only see one half or the other of your outfit!

Finding my room, its much easier to go out of the hotel and use the adjacent main doors.

  • 10/10 Anonymous ( Mature couple)

"We arrived later than expected (21:45) and missed our table booking (21:15). At reception we were told we may just make last orders at the bar, which was virtually closed for food. The bar staff were extremely helpful and took our order and did what they could to make our evening comfortable. The food was excellent." (97957938)

The overall Hotel, room, grounds and quality of food was very nice. The staff were very helpful and acommodating which made the overall stay more enjoyable.

"Lovely traditional hotel with a twist of modern luxury. Our room was a little on the small side but with a huge bathroom. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Breakfast was superb! Bar area very relaxing and the SPA/gym facilities looked great even though we didn't get chance to use them." (97350291)

Lovely old hotel with a twist of modern luxury!

The net curtain in our bathroom! I am sure the entire SPA residents watched me showering!

  • 9/10 Helen ( Solo business traveller)

from Brixham , GB  on  May 16, 2007

The room was excellent and the staff were very friendly. I stay at this hotel regularly and the room was the best I've had yet.

The rooms at this hotel vary hugely - I guess I got lucky this time!

  • 3/10 Helen ( Solo business traveller)

from Brixham , GB  on  May 9, 2007

I liked the setting of the hotel

The room was really below the standard I'd expect for a 4 star hotel.

  • 9/10 Anonymous ( Solo business traveller)

    on  May 5, 2007

"Never having stayed in a Mercure hotel I was unsure of what to expect, I was very pleasantly suprised. Staff were cheerful and helpful, food was good and although the hotel was busy it never seemed crowded." (99213363)

Larger than normal room, well supplied bathroom and water in room, great view.

TV would only get BBC1 & BBC2, looked like there was a signal fault.

  • 7/10 Louise ( Solo leisure traveller)

from Chepstow , GB  on  May 3, 2007

"The staff at the hotel were excellent. My room (69) was a little shabby but adequate. Breakfast was adequate but again coffee was lukewarm and did not appear terrribly well organised so a lot of queing was necessary. So overall I would stay here again but as it is not a cheap hotel I didnt feel it was terribly good value for money." (99130436)

bed and bathroom clean and comfortable

rest of the room was not particularly clean, especially dressing table, really dirty

  • 8/10 Helen ( Solo business traveller)

from Brixham , GB  on  April 24, 2007

"I stayed at the hotel for one night for a business stay on a Thursday evening. Unfortunately, the room I was allocated was above a very loud function (we're talking very loud music - the floor shook, horns and bad karaoke). I complained to reception and was told there was nothing they could do. I would suggest, for the future, that if hosting a loud function, the rooms above the function room should only be allocated to people attending the function; that way, no business customers are bothered by it. It's a real shame that I had this bad experience as I hoped to stay at the hotel on a regular basis and this has put me off somewhat." (99391622)

The room and the facilities were excellent. Very clean and good value for money.

Fountain outside the room seemed very loud at 7 in the morning.

Room was clean and a little more room than some standard hotels.

Shower was not very powerful. Television was working only on limited channels.

"a very enjoyable and pleasant stay overall, but as above, the drinks were too dear. also, this may sound like a small thing, but with the complimentary tea and coffee in the room, it would have been nice to have more than one packet of biscuits! its the small things that make the difference!" (99084206)

The look of the building, the leisure facilities. it felt like a real treat staying here.

i thought the drinks and food were over priced.

Impressive hotel with good facilities. Nice grounds with easy access to motorway network.

The room was very dusty, a result of poor attention to detail by cleaners, our bedhead was filthy! We had to complain to the reception who had the room cleaned whilst we were out for the evening.

"Room part of upgraded wing; central part of hotel more old-fashioned. In-room facilities basic but adequate - bathroom excellent. Restaurant/cooking good, but no a la carte menu; table d'hote adequate/limited and not too dear. Bar poor and drinks dear. Car park ponds in heavy rain, which is common here." (99698506)

Spacious room; v.g. bathroom; natural ventilation; quiet.

Long travel distance, partly outdoors, from reception to room.

  • 3/10 Kevin ( Solo leisure traveller)

    from Cumbernauld , United Kingdom;GB  on  July 4, 2006

"The Hotel was advertised as set in seventeen acres of Lancashire parkland THIS IS VERY MISLEADING! The only walk is around the carpark and outside is a choice of; the Industrial Estate, a very busy and noisey road up to Rishton or the motorway. The only sign of the Country was in the evening of the wedding when the cows were let into the adjoining field and their aroma wafted through the open doors (the aircon couldn't cope). Also, at nearly £6 for a SINGLE glass of wine being typical of the inflated bar prices, it made people uncomfortable when in company about accepting friends offers to buy a round of drinks." (3304792910)

Those of the staff that could speak English were very nice.

Poor level of comfort e.g. windows very small and screwed shut, no aircon, shower not working etc.

    Quality of the public rooms

Cost of food and particularly wines was very high. Disliked that there was only a fixed price set 4 course menu.

With a better menu this would be an excellent place to stay. Would stay again, but eat in the town." (3304573833)

    Good leisure facilities

Don't like having to go outside to get to room.

"Check-in: no guidance to my room - I found it myself (205). No facilities overview at check-in. No invitation to book for dinner - I was a single business traveller and prime candidate for inhouse dinner. In the event, I went to a local pub. Breakfast: I was ignored completely after being seated. I helped myself at the buffet but was never asked whether I wanted tea or coffee, toast etc and none was forthcoming." (2887838)

Firm, comfortable bed. The bathroom. Health club.

All guest-facing service and interaction. My overall impression was of staff who were minimally polite but indifferent.

  • 6/10 Barry ( Family with older children)

from Wokingham , United Kingdom  on  October 11, 2005

"Impressive hotel superficially, but lets itself down on the detail when compared with most similar quality hotels, even in this country. Restaurant has improved, but the nouvelle cuisine will not be to everyone's liking and seems a little dated even now. I will be consider searching for a competitive hotel in the area next time." (1797179)

Fairly good room in a better part of the hotel. Hotel situated local to function we were due to attend. Improved restaurant from previous visit. Restaurant staff and Porters still the best in the whole hotel.

Maintenance of room fittings, sealants around bath/sinks. Trouser press with adequate access. Ironing board retained within wardrobe to restrain it from attacking you every time you take clothes out. Provision of one of those little used items - a sewing kit. Absolutely vital when you need one. Needs a vastly more effective and user-friendly check-in process. Greedy assignment of £high value to credit card even before you cross the threshold. How many people actually do a runner ?? Parking areas continue to look untidy and disorganised. Stair carpets looking a little threadbare now. Not the details you expect in a 4* at the prices being asked.
