"Nice inn in the country, near main roads but heavy rush hour traffic leaving in the morning. Excellent staff. Amazing facilities in room for 2* hotel: welcome tray, large TV, PC, free internet, trouser press, iron / ironing board. Small but comfortable room. Really nice inn food for dinner and a good selection of malt whiskeys! Choice of cooked breakfasts included. Reception wrote out exact directions for my next stop." (97717225)

Great value, welcoming staff, well-equipped room, free wi-fi and computer

Difficult traffic getting away. Room rather small.

The location was convenient and relatively quiet. We all felt very 'at home' there and were able to relax in the evenings in the bar lounge on some very comfortable sofas." (97253831)

The hotel was easy to find, comfortable and welcoming.

The single bedrooms were a little cramped.

"Although our stay was perfectly pleasant, the owners could have engaged a little more with their guests and shown a little more interest in us as clients. Our room contained an eclectic mix of old and new facilities, so it was a little incongrous in its presentation, though we did feel that the room was somewhat on the expensive side considering what was in it. The bed was surprisingly comfortable because it seemed a little hard at first but we had an excellent night's sleep. Also, the bathroom had a wonderful power shower and lovely bath. It was difficult to open any windows as some of their fixtures and fittings looked as if they weren't safe to touch. The breakfast was a disappointment and quite indifferent. This was a shame as we always look forward to a nicely cooked breakfast when we are away from home. It was very dry and the eggs were overcooked. The one lone plum tomato on our plate could have done with a little juice with it. The toast was undercooked." (99797290)

Loved the bathroom and splendid shower. Liked the fact that there was a settee and a sizeable table to sit at. Liked the facility for web-browsing but was disappointed that they system did not work very well. Lovely to receive the flowers and the fruit bowl.

"Staff friendly and keen to please but not obsequious. We arrived a bit late for lunch and the proprietor politely said he would check if something could be done for us. It could and I ordered lasagne assuming that it would be microwaved. We were told it would take 30 minutes as it was cooked from scratch and that is exactly how it tasted. Great chips and big portions. Garlic bread clearly freshly made. After lunch we went upstairs to sleep it off and shortly afterwards a knock at the door announced a bowl of fruit - a lovely refreshing thought. Good cooked breakfast with kippers and haddock available as an alterative. We were due to attend a party 3-4 miles away and the proprietor was very helpful in suggesting cab firms. Later he offered to take us back to the venue the next day if we chose to drive there, leave the car and get a cab back thus saving us a cab fare one way. What a lovely and refreshing attitude. In the end we didn't avail ourselves of the offer as our plans changed but how often do you get that sort of treatment? We've stayed in similar places but the atmosphere here was so much better. We have felt we were imposing in someone's home in other places but not here." (99345030)

    The staff were all lovely.

It is dated and a bit tired but in a comfortable way.

The staff are excellent and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. They were also flexible and provided early breakfast to enable us to go to an event on time. Excellent food. A particularly fine hotel for 'petrol heads' with a good collection of motor racing memorabilia." (3304845135)

"Had I arrived by chance off the street, I might not have stayed, as the first impression was of a grubby carpet, visible rooms slightly worn (bar area), and a messy reception cubby hole. However, the friendliness and efficiency of the owner quickly overcame this first impression, as did the bedroom itself, which was clean, airy and fresh. It became obvious on better acquaintance that the hotel was a friendly meeting place for local people and groups, and had a slightly quirky but extremely relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We booked for dinner and had a magnificent meal – rather more expensive than we had expected, but very generous portions of the most delicious and interesting food served by friendly and attentive staff made it worth the money. I have a food intolerance, and the staff went to a lot of trouble to accommodate my needs. It is certainly a hotel I would visit again in the future." (3304521256)

Friendly, helpful and efficient staff; clean, spacious and well-furnished bedroom; nice touches such as large bottles shampoo & shower gel/bowl of fruit/free internet access/plenty of reading matter provided in lounges. Lovely view over the well-kept garden.

Only one (small) window able to be opened in bedroom. From my personal point of view, the curtains were too thin, as I was woken at 5 am by the morning sun streaming into the room – this disturbed me because I am a light sleeper, but there may be other guests who feel the same way.

"Was very impressed with the overall quality and value for money that this hotel offered. Although the single room was small there were lots of thoughtful details to make life easier. For example a PC with internet access was available which makes a huge difference when you are between locations. A little bowl of fruit beside the tea and coffee and an iron and ironing board were supplied, all very handy. I was also pleased to find a cd/alarm clock beside the bed as a solo traveller it was nice to be able to listen to cds. Felt that all these little things helped me feel at home away from home." (3304424926)

The rural location although easily accessible from main routes created a relaxing and peaceful environment after a busy day. The atmosphere was friendly and informal and had a really cosy local pub fell about it.

The room could have been a little cleaner and the shower was slightly dodgy but otherwise very pleased.

"Altogether a pleasant experience. The owners and staff were friendly and attentive, and the feeling was like staying with relatives. If you are using this as a base to travel into Oxford then remember that it takes a lot longer to get into the city in the mornings than it does to get out at night. If you miss the restaurant by checking in late then try The Fox just opposite and down the hill, otherwise go down the hill and turn left and take the first exit off the first roundabout to the nearest town where you will find a half decent Chinese takeaway and the hotel is happy for you to bring your meal back to the bar." "Staff were friendly and helpful and I felt comfortable as a single traveller. Nice and quite room of adequate size. General effect in room was of cheap furnishings but room was comfortable, very clean and level of facilities made up for decor. Bar menu was ok, plenty of choice but a little over priced (I felt) for the standard of food but this is probably a reflection on Oxford's prices - it is quite an expensive place. Plenty of choice at breakfast. The hotel goes out of its way to make sure you have everything you need and has books, puzzles, games, pool table etc in the bar and a free wireless internet area that guests are free to use with their own laptops. If it rains you will have plenty to do in the hotel." (2633278)

Good range of facilities in room, Internet connection, CD player. Nice quiet room.

new duvet cover (it had a couple of what looked like cigarette burns) General furnishings were a little old and tired. Broken corner in window needs fixing and tv reception not great. Larger bowls for cereal. Corner mirror over sink made it difficult to wash face and toilet needed to be tweeked to stop it running. Wires for internet were loose.

"I cannot say we did not enjoy our brief stay - but we were expecting more of a country hotel/house experience with charming rooms. However the wall paper/curtains/carpet and bedding of our room (34) was desperately in need of complete renewal (though the bed was very comfortable) and we had a super new bathroom/power shower. Next time would probably try to get closer to Oxford in a more modern hotel." (3304741092)

Large room and excellent bathroom. Staff and owners were very friendly. Enjoyed our meal - with very friendly service. I liked the free internet but was unable to get the @ to work on the keyboard.

The decor and bed linen on our 4-poster was tired and faded, as was the general decor throughout. The whole place was in need of a facelift. Yet it was a very friendly and accommodating hotel, which is important.

"We were very disappointed with the food as I had read good reviews, I had a T-bone steak (£15:00) which was tough and tastless, the vegetables were much the same, breakfast did not fare any better. As we were staying late in the year maybe the regular chef was on holiday. The computer in the room was very useful, the security settings could have been set a little lower so I could d/l the PDF maps of the area. The common areas were a bit messy and the dining room could do with some improvement; The seat covers were stained, dirty tablecloth, dirty crockery (tea stained cups); cobwebs, dust and rust on ironwork. We used the Park & Ride to access Oxford which is a short drive from the hotel." (3000348)

Quiet location; Computer in room; Fresh fruit in room; Comfortable bed.

Cleanliness in common areas; Food in general; Room (25) a little cold even with all the heating on, window would not shut properly.

"As you will have noted from questionnaire, we have stayed in quite a number of hotels in the past 6 months (we were 3 months in Australia). Regrettably this hotel in England was easily the worst. Having said that the staff were friendly and polite. We do not feel able to recommend the hotel to our friends who live in Boars Hill nearby and whose party we were going to which is a pity as had we been able to do so undoubtedly they would pass on that recommendation to friends when next they have a family celebration. My croisants at breakfast were stale (quite unnecessary as croisants freeze very well and defrost very quickly and so should prove one of the easiest things to produce for breakfast)." (97152576)

    polite, friendly staff

Carpet badly stained and as no slippers provided (usually quite normal in most hotels these days) felt uneasy having to walk on it barefoot. Things left in drawers including broken photograph frame?(broken glass) No soap. Towels old and frayed and small and should be thrown out. Holes in sheet. Mattress should be replaced - could feel springs of mattress. Bed linen well passed its sell by date and looked and felt most unappealing. The Safe was locked so I could not get into it to reset it and when I requested assistance to open it, it wasn't tested. I was unable to use it as it appeared to indicate that the batteries were low. No instructions as to how to use the computer. Bathroom in dire need of upgrading eg. no towel rails. Poor shower. Room decor very old fastioned in dire need of upgrading - a slap of white paint is all that is required.
