Excellent location to town. Excellent value for money.

    Small rooms.

Hotel manager very understanding and helpful after complaint.he arranged for us to be moved to another room away from the courtyard side.

roudy drunken like behaviour from an off duty member of staff 3 nights in a row in the central courtyard first 3 nights of stay.We had a 2 year old with us and it was to warm to close windows.I comlained to mamager and would have checked out after the 3 days stay(we planned 5 nights stay)

"The reception staff were lovely and very helpful, One made a special effort to provide us with written directions. " (107122577)

rooms very clean and tidy, despite the hotel being old.

breakfast service too slow. Ate continental breakfast and still had not even been offered tea or coffee by the time we fininshed, never mind being asked if we wanted a cooked breakfast. A real shame this is the only thing to let the hotel down.

"All in all, very positive and enjoyable." (97996558)

Excellent staff, very attentive and friendly service. Room very well appointed and comfortable, quiet surroundings.

Common areas of hotel such as the corridors rather shabby looking and in need or redecoration. Some rooms difficult to access/find.

  • 7/10 Graham (Solo business traveller)

from St. albans , GB on  July 21, 2008

"Generally very good, would definitely stay again. I was also spoilt in having a double room at the single rate which compensated somewhat for the hot water problem." (108036205)

Overall impression of the Hotel was very good, the staff were always polite and helpful. Booking and checking in was prompt and efficient.

There was no hot water in my room for the first night and following morning due to a plumbimg problem which was frustrating after a long day working and travelling. I was allowed to use another room for showers but maybe some form of reimbursment would have been nice or complimentary wine or something with dinner would have been a nice touch.

"I would not have wanted to have stayed more than one night." (97747119)

Comfortable beds and ample hot water. Reasonable breakfast.

Poor coordination between reception and staff - no morning papers depsite bveing booked. Long cold corridors with a tired decor.

  • 5/10 Julie (Same sex couple)

from Loughborough , GB on  July 20, 2008

"Very disapointed. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone." (108050381)

the evening meal was very good and generally good value.

The standard room was very standard, below what I expected. The bathroom smelt fusty due to no ventilation and mould growing in the window frame. The room was general grubby. The hotel is in need of a major face lift. staff not friendly, particularly the restaurant staff.

  • 7/10 William (Mature couple)

from Penrith , GB on  July 15, 2008

"weather iffy, plenty to do in the area, enjoyable stay. One thing other than whats been said, Shearings bus parked outside our room at approx 6.30am and the driver was shouting at someone then left the bus running for over 30mins for some reason before they went, typical attitude of if I'm up everyone should be up." (108087879)

    Staff we nice and friendly

Hotel was shabby, needs a revamp

  • 8/10 Keith (Young couple)

    "excellent" (108009935)

very clean room - food in restaurant was excellent and overall very good value for money i would definately stay again

the only bad point that comes to mind was the room was smaller than expected in the superior room but not too bad and the shower head leaked but not too much of a problem

  • 5/10 Derrol (Group of work colleagues)

from Wigan , GB on  April 25, 2008

"Very poor bar facilities and little choice, no real ales and a very small selection of whiskeys. Hotel caters to coach parties and these are the main focus of the hotel. They are not interested in other paying guests at all. We found it impossible to book any evening meals even when giving 24 hours notice,as we were told that the restaurant was full all the time with coach parties.Told we should have booked dinner when we made the original booking, I have never stayed in any hotel anywhere were guests cannot book a meal once they have had a look at the menu and made an informed descision.Complained at the time but to no avail. Public bars are rammed full of locals in the evening watching sky sports with all availaible seats taken, leaving guests to mill about." (97082558)

The rooms were clean and the Breakfast was good.

Dated decor in public areas of the hotel. Minute towels in the rooms and pathetic little tv's.

"It was fine for an overnight stay." (97381781)

Upon arrival, we mentioned that we thought we had ordered a double room, and were readily supplied with one instead of our twin room.

Access from our double room to the reception part of the building involved going outside, and walking round to the main entrance. It was only a short distance, but in heavy rain this was annoying. It could easily be overcome by connecting the 2 buildings in some way. Sloped entrances into both buildings would be a big improvement, instead of steps, to make getting luggage into the hotel much easier. It appeared that many of the people using the bar area were local youths, who were not staying at the hotel. They were no trouble, but this could detract hotel residents from drinking and eating there.

Tiny room with poor furnishings, also very overlooked from window. Internet gave impression of grand hotel whereas my experience was of a shabby hotel which has not been updated in terms of decor or furnishings for too long.

  • 7/10 Andrew (Mature couple)

"An excellent break - we will almost certainly be back next time we visit the area." (97899071)

Nice hotel, excellent venue and the staff were very friendly. Food was very good and well presented in comfortable surroundings.

Our room overlooked an outdoor area used by smokers, presumably guests from the main bar. We were disturbed several times during the night by guests who were talking loudly in this area; this continued until around 6am. I don't suppose this is a regular occurrence, but I guess it would be nice if hotel staff were aware of this potential problem so that they could explain the situation to guests guests using this area. Certain areas of the hotel could do with a little more TLC; I understand that it must be a major task to keep such a beautiful and elaborate hotel in tip-top condition, but some aspects did let the rest of the hotel down; the owners must continue to strive for the excellence that the hotel deserves.

    " Good." (97412627)

Comfortable, well presented hotel; polite friendly staff; well-furnished clean room; good well presented meals; excellent value for money break; nice entertainment; picturesque location

Delays in food delivery between courses at Dinner. Breakfast buffet not always replenished regularly. Our concerns were reported and acknowledged.

  • 8/10 Dave (Other)

    "Overall, fine." (97920860)

Hotel was good value in an area where decent hotels can be hard to find and expensive.

Some of the staff were rather abrupt when trying to get an early breakfast and an evening meal which we had not booked.

  • 9/10 Anonymous (Group of adult friends)

    on  May 30, 2008

Room was spacious with good views and very comfortable bed. Breakfast was of high quality, well presented, and provided plenty of choice.

Nothing to dislike, but all bar areas would benefit from some decoration and refurbishment.

  • 7/10 Anonymous (Mature couple)

    on  May 29, 2008

"Would stay at this hotel again because the price (£40) for one night was very reasonable and the breakfast was served efficiently and speedily. Our only issue was at reception when we checked in. The receptionist was not friendly. She did not smile or welcome us. We arrived early evening on Thursday 21 May after a long drive. I realise that this may have been the end of her shift, but she did not present a welcoming face for the hotel. We felt deflated by her attitude." (97083599)

Laundered sheets were of high quality. Bar provided drinks in a pleasant atmosphere. Breakfast was good and staff were efficient and willing to go the extra mile.

Room was a bit dismal. Decoration was tired. Bath ensuire was very small. Toilet would have been hard to use had one been overweight! However, we realise we could have paid more for presumably a better appointed/decorated room.

  • 6/10 Robert (Mature couple)

from Church stretton , GB on  May 26, 2008

"A reasonable tourist hotel definitely showing its age. Could be very grand with a good refurbishment but then prices would have to go up and that's clearly not the targeted market." (97370596)

    Location for purpose required.

The need to charge for credit card settlement - do we pay next for the number of steps taken across foyer carpet ? Either hotels want the paying customer or they don't - don't inflict Ryanair-type surprises on arrival. Parking bays too narrow.

paid for a single room and received a roomy twin

most rooms have brilliant views of lake or mountain unfortunately mine overlooked the courtyard

from Norton, evesham , GB on  April 9, 2008

"The only disappointment was that the restaurant was fully booked when we checked in so had to go elsewhere for an evening meal. On reflection when booking on line I should have made a table reservation although I would have wanted to see the menu beforehand. All staff from check in to check out were polite and courteous. Overall I rate our stay as excellent and with the current special rate for double rooms this was excellent value for money and we will certainly return." (97800098)

The whole experience was excellent. The staff were attentive and professional. Attention to details was extremely good. The use of white gloves when serving meals was a very nice touch and the quality of breakfast was also excellent.

"We had a lovely time, there are many attractions close by to the hotel and the scenery is breathtaking. The hotel is a little quirky, a bit like a labyrinth - took us several attempts to remember where our room was! The upkeep of the decor was not the best, the odd bit of wallpaper hanging off and stains on the carpet here and there, but this did not get in the way of us having a great time. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was very reasonable for the price." (97269303)

Close to attractions and lovely scenery, nice breakfast

Room smelt of fresh paint - affected my partner's asthma.

"As mentioned the decision was based upon realistic price and being able to take the dog into the hotel.." (97393503)

The facility to take your dog into your hotel room was the sole decision why we booked this hotel. I am glad to say everything else was very good, breakfast and staff..

Main concern is the general appearance of carpets and some furniture - could do with amajor overhaul! We have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful and the food excellent in quality and overpowering in quantity! All being well, we hope to visit you again in the future. (E.G. & N.J.MOORE)." (97470702)
