Hard bed provided in room 16 after first offering a soft bed. The soft bed was new but not suitable for a bad back. The hard bed was requested on the Internet booking and was important. Staff delightful at all times
Find sombre solours out of keeping with a Country House Hotel, but it was very comfortable.

"The hotel is lovely with an old world charm. It may be time to review the evening meal service which while excellent may be just too much for every night. Maybe the option of fewer courses at a cheaper rate. HOwever all the food was terrific" (97744931)
It location- beautiful lake setting set back from any traffic noise
rather cramped room but still good value at the price

everything for breakfast had to be selected from the menu, a buffet choice for cereals, fruit juices and bread would have been welcome.

"The location is idyllic. Able to walk down to Ullswater from the hotel grounds in moments, what more could you ask. The ambience of the hotel is fabulous, mostly reminiscent of a scene from a Miss Marple story, yet with a few updates that show up to date touches. The Waterside Suite in which we stayed is just one of the best rooms we have ever had the pleasure to reside in while travelling. Excellent view over the lake, huge and comfortable bed, elegant decor wondeful bathroom - perfect. The food and wine served are some of the best we've ever had, yet not the most expensive. Wine is beautifully presented, good temperature, especially for those that need chilling. The meals are exquisite, perfectly cooked and lovingly presented. Taste was superb - for every meal we had. We will be back just for this aspect of our stay. Lastly, service. Wonderful. Polite, friendly attentive to every detail. Lovely touches like having your room prepared for the night while you are at dinner, bed turned down, curtains drawn, items replenished. Fabulous. All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone." (99169852)
No one thing, just everything was perfect. We stayed here again because of our previous experience.
Absolutely nothing.

"We were generally very impressed with the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had a superb dinner in the evening which was very well presented, and the full English breakfast the following morning was to die for!! There was plenty of alternative choices for breakfast if you did not fancy the full English breakfast. The gardens are very well maintained and residents have the use of the croquet lawn, which we unfortuneately did not have time to take advantage of.There is easy access to the lakeside through the gardens. We were sorry that we had only booked one night at the Rampsbeck but had chose it as a stopover during our journey to Scotland as it is only six miles from the motorway. It turned out to be a very good choice thanks to the very good information from Active Hotels." (99415578)
The light airiness of the room and the wonderful view of the lake and hills.
The shower was not very powerful and we were unable to turn off the radiator in the bathroom. This was a particular problem as it was one of those very warm nights when radiators were not required.

I liked the situation of hotel, view and gardens. Very pleasant and attentive staff. Good room, bathroom and room service.
Basic tea tray for room with no choices of tea and no fresh milk. Regular double bed rather than king size.

Gorgeous hotel in amazing location, so easy to get to but yet felt a million miles from anywhere - staff so obliging and friendly, food was amazing, beds so comfy!
This is not a criticism, just a warning as there is no night porter and we did not realise so kept one poor girl up as we lounged by the bar for hours! It was only on the way up that we found out she had to stay up as long as we did.

"We enjoyed our stay not having visited the lakes before. This is a typical old country mansion converted to a hotel with generally big rooms. Our room though was on the small side and at ground level overlooking the staff car park. Some other rooms had excellent views of Ullswater. We would like to have known how to choose these rooms prior to booking. The restarant food was magnificent also catering for non residents. The room price includes evenig meal price of £47.00 per head. The extensive perfectly maintained gardens was a pleasure to stroll through." (3304717242)
Superb restaurant, 5* gourmet food, excellent staff. Excellent garden leading to Ullswater. Lounge rooms quiet and beautifully furnished.
Carpet in the bathroom! Bath design made it difficult to get out of. Old fashioned poor quality television.

The hotel was impeccably furnished, the bedroom and bathroom were fantastic as were the grounds. Dining in the evening was a wonderful experience and nothing was too much trouble for the owners and their staff." (3304751684)

Only criticism is that it was all or nothing in the restaurant in the evening. The dining experience was first rate but you couldn't do it every night.

Could completely relax, have a walk along the lake shore after a trying day, and then end the day with a wonderful dinner. Peace and quite were fantastic. Felt spoilt and cared for. Will definitely return for a longer break." (3304560119)
The room was spacious and very comfortable, beautifully appointed. Staff were excellent. As a single female staying overnight in a hotel is not always comfortable, the staff were sensitive to make my stay feel welcoming and friendly combined with immaculate service.
Would have preferred to have a room that took advantage of the wonderful view.

"We had the superior room, which was indeed superior! Very large with lounging space, lovely tasteful furnishing, a clean bathroom with power shower and soaps etc., a view of the neatly manicured garden. The list is endless! The room was number 17 and is definitely recommended. A pint of stella and a large measure of brandy with coke at the hotel's bar came to £10.50 but apart from that, no complaints whatsoever. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we were served whatever we liked for breakfast the morning after. The actual hotel had a very grand yet warm, homely feel to it and is opulently decorated with sumptuous carpets and furniture. Fantastic!" (3304541334)

"An excellent choice of hotel if you want great views service & food a good location for walking, can't really fault anything about the whole experience we had a lovely weeekend and would recommend this to anyone. Keeping in mind the food is excellent but at a price if you don't mind paying approx £40 a head and your drinks on top of that make it quite a pricey evening meal but the quality of service & food warrants this. Maybe best to ring them up ahead of your stay if you are vegetarian as there was not much choice on the menu. I Will definately be staying there again later in the year." (3304476719)

This hotel was an ideal base for walking, with only a short drive to many wonderful walks ranging from easy strolls to mountain climbs. The Ullswater steamer runs the length of the lake and can be reached by a 5 minute car ride into Pooley Bridge." (3304312505)

There was a pub near by that would have been good to visit on an evening. The staff were excellent and our breakfast overlooking the lake made a fantastic start to the day. We would certainly book at this hotel again." (3304288931)

"The postion at the head of Ulleswater is ideal not far from the M6 in a most beutiful senic area. That this family run hotel is listed amongst the 200 best hotels by the AA, and that is amongst a much smaller number of this list for the excellence of its cuisine. Moderately expensive but worth ever penny." (3304182636)
The whole stay was a pleasant experiance. The food lives up to the reviews with no effort spared to make dining superlative. The chef well deserves the three rosettes awarded by the AA inspectors

"We could not fault our suite, which was extremely comfortable, clean and excellently presented. The bed was very comfortable (the best of any hotel I have stayed in), the pillows soft, and the bed-linen pristine. The huge bathroom was spotless. There was a large TV in both our bedroom and sitting room, both with freeview channels. Tea and milk was replenished almost as we used it. The public areas of the hotel were spacious, and the gardens lovely. The staff, too, were attentive, polite and professional in every way. Neither the service nor the accommodation could have been bettered, and we look forward to our return." (97724484)
