"Avoid it unless you are A) Rich, B) A polar bear, C)not interested in watching a good picture, D) Able to sleep through constant humming." (97687175)

It looked nice from the outside. There was ample car parking.

The room was cold, noisy (a generator nearby?) and the tv reception was rubbish. There was little service in the bar - had to go looking for staff on the two nights I stayed there. The food was overpriced and arrived with items of differing temperature on the same plate. I couldn't eat the breakfast on the day I left as it was absolutely soaked with grease. Also there was a £2 charge for paying by credit card! amazing. I can't recall the rest - I put it all on the feedback slip in the room and posted it in reception - don't suppose you've read it.

    Easy access to rooms

Black mould on the silicon seal around the bath. Unsafe electrical equipment (lead to kettle coming apart exposing the inner cores). The chairs in the room were dusty and had not been vacuumed properly for some time.

The room was over priced for the services provide. we attended and wedding and the bar service was poor. There were only 2 members of staff on who were particularly slow.

"not that impressed and would not come back" (97332693)

being offered discount due to wrong room booking, breakfast

booked into wrong room, hotel could not offer alternative, dark room, not given gate code to leave hotel when we booked in, breakfast only till 10am so could have been a bit later

reception phone not answered at 1am so went down to reception and the desk was not manned at all. despite constant bell ringing nobody came.

"Our stay was limited and therefore my comments are likewise limited. I was impressed with the initial view of the hotel and reception area. My only criticism would be that I requested of the internet a smoking room on my search criteria, and the hotel is totally non-smoking." (3304117954)

The Hotel was clean and tidy, the staff were friendly and mostly helpful.

Directions could have been a little more accurate, or maybe a sign at the bottom of the hill to give positive directions.

"Spa, Reception and bar staff were very polite and helpful 10/10. Just disapointed about the breakfast and general service on both days of stay. One bad morning could be a one off, though two is questionable." (3305217424)

    Pleasant surroundings and hotel.

Breakfast - Saturday morning their was a long delay before ordering any hot food, which was then forgotten / lost. Finally received different order after 30 mins, which included burnt kippers. Surprised at the length of time taken to clear tables. Sunday - Though seated straight away, we were not approached again for any hot food order.

Good sized room, clean condition. Excellent location/setting. Lovely staff. If we were being picky we'd sat the television sets were too low (in a hotel room most people would be watching from the bed)

No air conditioning (a very warm night - unusualin Wigan, I know!). Room door closers made the doors slam. Sound-proofing could have been improved (we could hear people speaking in the next room).

"We use MacDonald hotels a lot but this one was a bit of a disappointment. Although reasonably modern with good parking and fairly friendly staff, the room was quite dirty, the sheets were worn (holed)and some of the general customer areas were also looking tired and dirty (the lift for example)" (3304558879)

Reasonably quiet with a good gym

    Not very clean

    Clean, good facilities. Friendly staff

Service should be quicker - at check in/out only one person In the Restuarant we had to ask for service and ordered coffee after the meal, but had to leave before it was delivered.

"Lovely hotel, lovely staff, lovely grounds, just the individual rooms need reconsidering." (3304221593)

The pool was fantastic!Staff were incredibly friendly and willing to help.

The rooms were a big disappointment. Not 4 star standard decorating and the fact that you couldn't turn the tv up louder than 2 notches meant it almost wasn't worth having on.Hate to think how an older couple would cope.

"The one dissapointing issue here was the fact that the walls are paper thin. I had to listen to next doors television for all of the evening, I asked the reception for a room change and they replied that they were full. I specifically asked for a quit room at the point of booking. They did not even ring next door to ask them to reduce the volume! I was appalled. Contrast this with the service from the woman who was manging the health suite where the helpfullness was first class!" (2932672)

leisure facilities and the standard of rooms and the general decor

"The price for an executive double room was fair but the room was too small & did not convey any executive image. Food & drink was excessively expensive & main course vegatable portions were inadequate. Quality of food, presentation & resturant service was good" (2778695)

Quality of furnishings was good the but room was too small for an executive double

Reception asked if I wished a table in the resturant for dinner but forgot to book it. Resturant was not identified & the eating area was difficult to find within the actual building itself; being to the rear & through small archway via an area with covered tables. The resturant is too far from the reception/accomodation area & there was no apparent internal route in wet weather.

"see sbove I would recommend this hotel but not to any one who has walking difficulties" (2799563)

the hotel very nice and the food was very good but for a 4star hotel the room that we stayed in which was booked as a executive twin had very thin walls and we could hear everything that was going on in the surrounding rooms and even the floor below .On the last morning we were there a phone rang for over a hour from around 6am through to 7pm(a early morning call but the guest had already left I think). We would not have booked this hotel had we known just how many steps there was it's quite a distance from room 304 to the resturant and as my partner is partially disabled she found it very hard and ruined her break which was ment to be relaxing I think it should be advertised about the steps

"We stayed two nights, one of which we attended a wedding reception at the hotel. This was run to perfection. Serving 200 guests with a meal that was served hot was an accomplishment in itself." (2265431)

  • 9/10 Trevor ( Mature couple)

    from Southampton , United Kingdom;GB  on  August 24, 2005

"The hotel is split into three buildings, we stayed in the original old house which retains its features such as wood panelling, high ceilings and fireplaces, all tastefully preserved. A real haven away from the hustle and bustle set in grounds adjacant to the Worthington Lakes which made for a very pleasant evening stroll. We ate in the Laureate Restaurant - three course meal for £27 per head was, we thought, value for money given the nature of the establishment. Attentive but not intrusive staff gave excellent service. Portion sizes were exactly right, in that we were left feeling pleasantly full at the end. A pleasant change from paying over the top for a small piece of meat with six chips stacked artfully next to it - the food was nevertheless presented with style." (2664843)

Comfortable, in excellent grounds with a pleasant view and well preserved features such as the wood panelling and ornate ceilings.

None that wouldn't be considered nit-picking

"After checking in with a very pleasant reception staff,we had afternoon tea and drinks in the burns bar, again we were met by pleasant courteous staff, Later we dined in the restaurant and it was a most pleasurable exoerience, again the staff were excellent and the food delicious. After a very comfortable night we had breakfast brought to our room by a smiling courteous waitress, just the thing to send you off on your way. In our opinion this hotel has it all but most of all a big thank you to all the staff who made our stay so memorable." (2532555)

It was a very clean and tidy comfortable room. everything in working order and a comfy bed

Hard to say as the standard of accomodation, dining.and by no means least the staff were excellent.

"General review favourable: really enjoyed the excellent breakfast, friendly staff, swim, jacuzzi and walk in the beautiful grounds and path around the lakes." (2374255)

Nice large bathroom. Excellent lighting in corridor.

Furniture and decor made our room rather dark so a freshen up in modern, paler colours would really help. Not keen on the scratchy blanket ! Prefer duvet.

"Wasn't clear whether it was a smoking or non smoking. No ashtrays and no signs???" (2401448)

Novelty lay out but not so good when it rains.

It wasn't clear to us we were booked as bed and breakfast in the price until I rc'd the invoice the following morning. By then we'd missed it. Would have liked it made clear about breakfast arrangements on booking in.

"The hotel is easily located from the motorway M6 Jnct 27. The only small criticism is that on entering grounds atthe main entrance there is little guidance to the hotel reception and I wonder how many vistors have parked in the wrong carpark and attempted to book into the main restaurant." (2460049)

The room was exactly as advertised and was extremely quiet and comfortable. The restaurant overlooked attractive gardens and made the dining experience very pleasurable

Greater choice of main courses on the evening menu

"The location map and directions to the hotel were obscure, it is essential that you improve this. Not easy to identify where every thing is on arrival. The signs could do with improving to make it clear where all the facilities are. My stay was too short for any more comments. Generally OK" (2176862)
