"Very good indeed would love to stay there again. Such good service is a big plus! " (108015621)

good food and plenty of it. service friendly, prompt and efficient. All staff friendly and considerate in the best possible ways. I was late booking so had to shared a double bed with my daughter on the first night. When a cancellation was received by the proprietors we were offered a twin room for the remainder of our stay. This room was superior to the original room and much appreciated. The staff moved all our gear too!

We enjoyed the starters and the main courses very much but were less impressed by the desserts which were mainly bought in and not made on the premises.

" The location is good for Craster, Alnwick, Alnwick Castle, Gardens and Alnmouth and we had no complaints about the hotel or the service however the price, £140 for two with evening meal we thought was a little on the high side. If we had invited friends to come with us we would have felt uncomfortable about asking them to pay this for one nights stay. " (97956734)

Good, clean reasonably appointed room, friendly staff, probably average price.

"This site we booked throught did not state that all rooms were en-suite.It would have been helpful to know that their restaurant gets full quickly so you need to book a table at the same time. The booking in was a bit slap dash. This sounds negative but are only observations and did nothing to spoil what was a lovely night away in a very beautiful place." (99627942)

The room was very smart and clean. Looking out on a beautiful location

The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. Evening meals are served in the bar area and the food was excellent. Also a full english breakfast included in the price. An ideal location for peace and quiet but within easy distance of Alnwick and the excellent, unspoilt Northumberland beaches." (99903990)

  • 9/10 Robert ( Mature couple)

We loved the location, the views were fantastic, being woke up in the morning by the sound of lambs was a bonus!

The first room we were given was a little dark it was in the roof space. we asked if there was another room with a balcony, We were moved no problem. We would have liked a kingsize bed, just because we have one at home.

The staff were all pleasant but the eveing meal service was a bit slow. Sometimes hard to get attention of staff who were chatting amongst themselves.

"I did not realise that the rooms would be in a separate building from the Hotel but this did not detract from my stay. I really did like the varied, local cuisine in the restaurant and glad my husband and I chose to eat at this fine hotel. The accommodation was within easy reach of all places of interest we wanted to visit and at a reasonable price. We were very fortunate to be staying at the hotel during the stay of some ramblers who were practising singing their rambling songs in the bar it was wonderful." (99322902)

Excellent location, with friendly, helpful staff. Rooms spacious and well equipped.

  • 9/10 Alan ( Mature couple)

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The gardens and surroundings were pleasant. The company was good, similar people to ourselves. The landlord and staff were helpful and there was plenty of local information in a folder in the room, making it easy to select places of interest.

Not allowed to smoke in the bar.

    "Thoroughly enjoyed our stay." (99529802)

Modern and clean, relatively quiet ie. not too much noise from other guest rooms.

Door to bathroom squeaked! hinges needed attention. Loo basin inadequately secured, resulting in loud banging noise when getting up. Intended to mention above, but as there for only two nights, refrained.

  • 9/10 Julie ( Mature couple)

    from Stockport , United Kingdom;GB  on  August 16, 2006

"We wanted to explore the Northumbria coast, and this cosy hotel was perfect for it. It is a few miles outside Alnwick which has a marvelous castle and gardens, and we explored the coast and went up to Holy Island. We decided to eat in the restaurant in the bar of the hotel and the food was excellent, there was a fine range of real ale to keep my hubby happy, and there was a small pub quiz late on Friday night which we enjoyed. This hotel is that fine balance between large and impersonal, and very small and in your face. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean. We would certainly stay here again, and I have already recommended it to some other couples. The fact we would go back tells you that it is a recommendation in itself." (3305139995)

The staff were friendly, the hotel was clean and comfortable and the food was good.

No remote control so I had to shift my backside to turn the TV off! But if that was my only problem, then it tells you that the place was fine.

"I would stay again, however I would request a top floor room!" (3304234622)

The surroundings were beautiful, very green.

The accomodation looked cute from the outside but felt a little 'old people's homey' inside. Also quite thin walls and ceilings so kept awake by gentleman upstairs walking about til all hours, then up again at 7am - this isn't what you want on holiday!

"Would have liked to have known the size of the accommodation and the location, i.e. within the main building or outside of it. On a positive note the staff were very friendly and helpful. Although the accommodation was billed as a pub/restaurant, due to the use of most of the bar area as a dining area there really wasn't anywhere to just sit and have a quiet drink or coffee. Accommodation described as luxurious - I certainly wouldn't agree with this statement. Would we stay there again ? Yes, if only for one night but not longer - not enough comfort in the room we had." (3304334633)

Cleanliness and helpfulness good. Food reasonable standard though certainly not cordon bleu.

Very small and cramped room. Outside of main area - necessitating a walk in wind and rain to eat! Shower broke after the second useage !

The choice of food on the menu was also good and we enjoyed two excellent meals. We would gladly go back again." (3304354792)

"Quiet location in the country was excellent. A dog barking in the hotel grounds was irritable in the evening but fortunately they were quiet by bed time. We expected a better room for £75 a night. Excellent breakfast and evening meals." (3304582206)

Good parking space. Good food. Dining area was all non-smoking.

Shower was fitted over the bath, but because of the roof shape there was no room to stand up!! Very small TV. Uncomfortable chairs in the room.

  • 8/10 Jacqueline ( Mature couple)

    from Hartlepool , United Kingdom;GB  on  April 25, 2006

"On arriving the Masons Arms was closed, understandable as it was 4pm which was between opening hours. However, it took two rings of the bell to get someone to answer the door and whilst the landlord was there a youner member of staff dealt with us and was very pleasant. Our evening meal was very nice, the young waiters were attentive and once again very pleasant. After finishing our meal we sat in the lounge area. By 10pm there was just the two of us left in the lounge area and whilst the landlord was around during that time he never came to speak to us at all. Just after 11pm we asked the landlord if it was possible to have another drink he responded by saying he was going to bed and we could have another drink but we would have to take our drink back to the room if we wanted. This was what we did. Our only criticism is that the landlord was really not very sociable or welcoming and unfortunately his response that evening has cost him any further business from us and any other recommendations we would have made to others." (3304496384)

The room was bright, well furnished and the bedding was fresh and clean. The bathroom was lovely and the shower was particularly powerful. The views over the surrounding countryside were wonderful.

There were cobwebs in the room and for some reason a lot of flies.
