"I would stay here again, I would just bring some ear plugs for the traffic noise" (99235160)
It was okay value for money, everything you would expenct for £40
My room was really hot (it had been a hot day) and with the windows open the traffic noise kept me awake

Good location, easy to find.
We asked for a no smoking room, and although the room had a no smoking sign in it, it reeked of stale cigarette smoke. The shower was OK but it could have been better.

Convenient location. Every amenity to hand.
Bedding requires up-dating. The atmosphere felt rather like a motel.

"We liked the idea of this being a motel with breakfast included - dining room in the main building. There was plenty of choice for those who didn't want a cooked breakfast. Our room was clean and comfortable with plenty of hot water for baths, showers etc. There was a double bed and a single bed in our room which did make it a bit cramped. The curtains had some hooks missing which made them hang badly and difficult to close. The staff we met were all excellent - cheerful, friendly and efficient especially Janine who went out of her way to be helpful." (97135059)
comfortable, warm and clean, food good.

"The hotel and all its facilities are excellent. Other than having to go out for an evening meal which was our decision there was nothing negative about our stay and it was more than we had expected. Our room and the staff were lovely and they accomodated any requirements we and other guests had. We were pleased to find that the hotel was not near busy roads as we had expected and the setting was very peaceful. Excellent breakfast too!" (97565697)
We liked the relaxed and inviting manner of the staff. The superior room we were given was excellent and very comfortable.
Although the hotel was fully booked no one seemed to be having an evening meal there and there was no activity in the kitchen so we felt we had to go out to eat.

"After making the booking I was contacted by the hotel to inform me that the main building and facilities were not available on the first night as they were not busy. I was not too bothered as I had lots of work to do , which involved internet access, this was not available in the room that I stayed in, which caused me a great deal of problems." (97374242)
The room was comfortable and private the food was good
you could not access wireless network from room as stated.

"see above,I assume that the business had recently changed hands and I have absolutely no criticism of the staff, however I belive that a quality control audit of the cleaning of guest rooms should be pursued at the earliest opportunity. The main part of the hotel (dining area and bar) was extremely nice and the food very good and the customer service from the staff was exemplary. I believe that, with attention paid to the state of the guest rooms, this would be a very nice place to stay in the future." (99251058)
friendly and helpful staff, comfortable and inviting bar area
room smelly and badly laid out. Bed very uncomfortable and not enough pillows. Light for bathroom poorly situated. Room felt dingy and cramped.

Nice room, good neutral decor and clearly looked after well.
Breakfast finishing at 9.30am on a Saturday is crazy! Very thin walls, our neighbours could hear us and we could hear them! Cleanliness could have been better, ie: hoovering the corners of the room and bathroom.

"Room was small and cramped. We had to wait about 25 minutes to be seated for breakfast and then a further 15-20 minutes for the breakfast to arrive. When it did it was no more than adequate - bacon and sausage were tasteless and there was more cereal in the sausage than on the breakfast display." (99758619)
Clean and tidy, off road parking, staff were good
Small room - breakfast barely adequate - not good value for money

"OK but hotel receptions and dining rooms are not the place to keep a dog." (99403535)
Room was a bit small but well decorated and pleasant
We were met at reception by an enthusiastic boxer dog! We rang a bell and eventually someone came to check us in. The dog wandered into the guest dining room and lay down. The manager found this amusing but we consider it to be unhygienic. There were dog's toys on the floor and a strong doggy smell.

"The rooms and indeed the entire hotel is rather quirky but very pleasant because of it. Well prepared breakfast and of a style and presentation in keeping with the whole establishment. Watch out for your arrival time.. the reception desk closes at 7:00 pm (not a problem for me) but if you don't let them know you will be late, you might be locked out. That said, they bend over backwards to accommodate you. Fine people. I'll be staying there again when next in Chester." (99327208)

Cosy 'country' feel to hotel. Liked the motel style rooms. Excellent breakfast
We were given a smoking room. Upon entering the smell was like going into an old working mens club! Opened all windows and doors but the blankets still stunk later in bed.

The breakfasts were excellent, well cooked, and very generous. We did not have dinner at the hotel so cannot comment on those." (3304079780)

"Overall, a great hotel with a 10 min bus ride into the town centre. Great service and great room. Only drawback was on the last day the hotel was closed at midday and I had nowhere to put my luggage. The guy working there said to leave bags at train station but the station later said you can't because of bomb threats. Therefore I had to leave for London early rather than staying in Chester for the rest of my last day." (3304761618)
Good, comfortable room with all the extras you need. Great service.

"The room, although adequate, was very small and in a block outside the main building as usually found in a motel. There was no check in facility, the room was left open with the key left on the dressing table and a voicemail message left on my mobile phone informing us of this (despite arriving at 14:00 hours). The public rooms of the hotel remained locked up until the first member of staff arrived at 18:30 hours. The few members of staff we met were very friendly and helpfull, but they were very few and far between. Prices had been inflated due to the dates coinciding with Chester Races." (3304622781)
The public rooms of the hotel were very clean and well presented. The food was excellent, the chef was one of the best we have come across in a small hotel.
Staff were scarce and there was no check in facility. The hotel tariff is greatly overpriced.

"We enjoyed our stay in Chester & Alton Lodge was a clean, comfortable, motel-style base for us. The brochure did say that it was a 15 minute walk to the city centre but it was considerably further than that. However the local taxi service was very good and reasonably priced. Alton Lodge would definitely benifit from some younger, friendlier staff, however it is an adequate base for young couples on short breaks." (3304208956)
The room was clean & comfortable. The breakfast was very good.
The manager was very efficient but very unfriendly - reminded us of Basil Fawlty! Could do with some young, pleasent staff at breakfast time as he clearly couldn't cope & this made the guests feel uncomfortable.
