"A combination of good service and freindly staff, good food and convenient location. It was easy to book, easy to find and although I booked at a quiet time of year, staff were waiting for prebooked arrivals to check in. Definitely a place to return to." (97746476)

The service was friendly and relaxed, with no request too much trouble. The location is sufficiently central to be convenient but still quiet at night.

"the hotel is a little dated but in good order and well managed this is one of the better hotels in the area for under 40 pounds per night. the room i stayed in was twin on the extension i found it to be spacious and well equipped the beds were comfortable and the shower powerful and hot. my only complaint is that there was some plumbing noise when other guests used their taps etc but this is only because i like total peace and quite. all the hotels in the area concentrate on full English breakfast or cereals. the option of a continental breakfast would have been nice. full English every day is not good. cheak in and out took minuits. i will used the balmoral for future stays within south port." (97069684)

large spacious rooms with good facilities

    more choice at breakfast.

"we enjoyed our stay in Southport: we have experienced better hotels for the same/less money as we paid here, so disappointed. The friendly staff made up for a lot of the niggles." (97354712)

welcoming atmosphere. breakfast good and plentiful. car parking. bed comfortable. central location. ease of come and go. cheerful staff.

some parts could do with a good clean. decor looked tired and in need of attention. bedroom floor creaked terribly in places. bed sheets too small and kept rucking during the night.

  • 4/10 Lisa ( Young couple)

from Barnsley , GB  on  November 1, 2007

"For a one night stay the hotel was ok. I felt it was way over priced for the surroundings and service we received. The hotel is allocated 2 stars, we would agree with this. If the bedrooms had a complete overhaul the stay would be lovely." (97203267)

The hotel looks grand from outside. The dining room and rear garden were lovely. The staff were helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was nice, and served hot.

The room we stayed in was extremely shabby. The wallpaper had been covered over white paint but we were able to see the pettern through the paint. The bathroom was quite spacious but not particularly clean. I was not impressed at all.

"Could be a very good hotel indeed - super staff - realise it is an old building and a bit of tlc would soon knock it into shape. Not sure if would stay again - though tempted by the very good breakfast." (97491688)

Very, very good breakfast - good quality and well cooked. very helpful staff who remembered what we had had the previous day and yet checked that we would like the same. Check in and out very quick and efficient. Staff friendly without being servile or over familiar. I would employ any of them! Plentiful hot water. Clean sheets and bedding.

Door to ensuite didn't fit, no lock on bathroom, no hook behind door. No soap in my daughter's bathroom at first. Bedroom carpet filthy.

  • 7/10 David ( Solo business traveller)

from Peterborough , GB  on  October 17, 2007

"A new shower door had been fitted but gaps between it and the tiles had not been filled and part of the door frame had not been replaced. Overall it appears the hotel has become shabby over a period of years and is in urgent need of a make-over. Having said that, the price charged was very fair and i only make the criticism in a way that i hope is constructive." (97344833)

Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfasts were very good. Dining room and lounge were fine.

My room was very small and in need of refurbishment. Carpet edges were not clean and bedroom furniture was very cheap melamine that had seen better days.

"Main road a little noisy not only through traffic but also revellers coming and going to Southport night spots. Ask for a room in the wing at the back - much quieter!" (97259417)

Friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast, pleasant dining room and magnificent cat.

Need to change room through being next to noisy neighbours playing radio, talking in loud voices, banging doors and generally treating the hotel as they might their own home - all this at a quarter to one in the morning. However, the staff were sympathetic and found an alternative and better room.

  • 9/10 Steven ( Solo leisure traveller)

from London , GB  on  May 20, 2007

"Don't be fooled that this hotel is only rated at two stars, that doesn't do it any justice, It is not a dive. If anything, it exceeded my expectations and I could easily add another star rating to this place. Pulling up to the drive, from the outside it is brightly painted, sign posted well, very presentable and looks very welcoming. The reception has plenty of space to drop your luggage and we were greeted with a smile by a fantastic lady, who made us feel very welcomed, who communicated very clearly and got us into our rooms promptly. This is much more than some higher rated hotels. The room and bathroom were immaculately clean throughout, a television that works and easy to operate, and the tea/ coffee making facilities nicely stocked up. The dinning room, was well spaced out, presentation of the tables nice and clean. The breakfast was well prepared, with good portions and plenty to choose from. Once again the staff were very pleasant and attentive. This may not be the most up to date or luxurious of places, but everything functions, and it's functional for a no frills, clean and friendly place to stay for a few nights. It's in a prime location and it's good value for what it is and the great staff you get there. Thanks to all. I recommend it!!" (99866470)

It's no frills very clean, easy to locate and value for money for what it is.

The main lighting in the single room I stayed in could have been brighter.

I also stated on your website that payment in full should have been taken from the card, these instructions were not passed on. Therefore I really wasted my time booking this accommodation, we were lucky that their were rooms available.I have cmpleted the questionnaire as I have no idea what Brian Millar thought about the hotel, he was too busy moaning to me that the hotel knew nothing of his stay. "Info about hotel on the web was good but more photos of rooms would be useful. I thought the room could do with a good general makeover. The bedhead, ceiling paper in places, fixtures and fittings in the bathroom and bedside cupboards etc were all tired and a bit shabby. The soft furnishings were poorly finished. Breakfast was good with good service in pleasant surroundings. In view of the quality of the room therefore we thought the charge of £80 per night midweek was too high and therefore would probably not return." (99020167)

food, convenient to walk to lord street and sea etc Staff were pleasant and friendly. Water nice and hot.

room somewhat shabby decorative state and poor finish to some funiture. No info about hotel or southport in the room. No instructions for TV or what channels were available etc. Toilet did not flush too efficiently!

"There were just one of two tiny little points (the finer details) which had been neglected. The hotel, staff and accommodation were adequate, but I feel that a little time and effort should be made to amend the minor faults in our room." (3304735619)

There was parking spaces. Comfortable bed. The room had a bath as well as a shower above. Excellent breakfast and good choice.

The extractor fan from the bathroom in the room next door to us (Room 6)was extremely noisy and woke me up at 6.30 a.m. The cover on the light above the mirror in the bathroom was broken. The door to the wardrobe only opened on one side. The teapot on the courtesy tray had not been emptied prior to our arrival.

"On arrival, we found the entrance and Reception area to be of a reasonable standard and the check in process very simple although no offer was made to help with luggage. We were allocated Room 5 which was of a reasonable size. A number of negatives here such as – badly stained carpet, bedside cabinets in poor state of repair, décor of room. The bathroom, again of a good size badly needed decorated as the paper was coming away from the walls and black mould was evident on the bathroom tiles. Not sure why, but there was no toilet roll holder – basic requirement??? Breakfast over the two days was very good and served by a pleasant host. Checkout on the Saturday was disappointing as the gentleman who served me was wearing a very dirty casual shirt which I assumed due to working in the Kitchen – a clean apron would look more professional and reassuring to the guest. We received a minimal thank you with no mention of – enjoyed your stay, help with travel directions. These things leave lasting impressions!! Overall, this could be a good hotel as it is in a good location. With some effort to upgrade the rooms and focus on customer meet and greet communications, I would be tempted to return."
